Cajun Corner Cafe

First decision, east or west side of Bayou Lafourche?  If you’ve ever driven in South Louisiana you know that for most roads which follow a bayou, there is also another road on the other side of the bayou as well. We usually drive the east side so today we took the west side.  Taking the west side, you drive through more of the many small towns while the east side is more countryside.  Either side of the bayou offers great views and interesting stops.

Clear blue sky, crisp air – perfect day for an outing.  Our destination, the Southern Louisiana Boat, Sport and RV Show, Houma, LA.  But, when you ride with John and Laurie, it’s always an adventure and today was no exception.  Today we would fly by the seat of our pants as well.

John lives hungry and the fact that it was lunch time was not lost on him.  Not one to miss a meal, when we came into Napoleonville, we were on the hunt.  Choices?  Cajun Corner Café sounded interesting and seemed to be our destination.  Housed in a turn of the century (early 1900’s) building that looks very old, if you did not know better, you would think it had shut its doors.  We are always adventurous so in we went and glad we did.  The café is small, less than ten tables and a bar with five stools.  There were two tables occupied, one with local law enforcement, always a good sign.  John checked out the menu, Laurie noticed the lunch special written on a small chalkboard.  We both decided on the lunch special – shrimp and okra gumbo, potato salad, and fried okra.  The gumbo had a rich roux with okra cooked down and loaded with gumbo shrimp.  The potato salad was creamy yet had chunks of potatoes.  The fried okra tasted homemade – the coating was light, crisp and not greasy.  The cost was $6.99 and it was a “field hand meal” – a term Laurie’s Aunt Dot applied to any lunch of a large quantity.

The café has been in operation for 17 years and appears to have a local following.  In fact, we ate there on their 17th anniversary.  The owner, Robert Hebert, was friendly and made small talk.  We would classify it as a typical small town café with great food and interesting atmosphere.  Next time we go through Napoleonville we both know John’s radar will go off and we’ll end up parking outside of the Cajun Corner Café!

Thanks Marlene. We once again had lunch at the cafe on our way to Grand Isle the Thursday before Mardi Gras. The meat pie was exceptional, well flavored and the cheese added an unexpected taste. Once again Laurie left with half her lunch and of course John cleaned his plate! We will definitely see you on our next trip to Grand Isle, you are a regular stop off for us now!
