Local Towning

Knowing we were going to hitch up and leave Hord’s Creek Lake in Coleman, TX today, we decided to have our morning coffee outside during the coolest part of the day.  Realizing it seemed dark for 6:30 in the morning, I opened the door to a dark sky and realized rain must be in the area.  This part of Texas, as most of Texas, has not seen rain in a very long time and we were happy for them.  For us it meant either packing up and leaving
in the rain or staying an extra day.  We opted for the extra day.

The storm hit and what a storm with lighting and thunder until 10:00 a.m.  Our surge protector did its job (another post) and we were glad of that.  Once the major part of the storm past, we decided to go into Coleman and see what the town offered.  Coleman, TX is a small west Texas town and at first glance you would think there is nothing to see or
do.  We always seem to find something interesting and Coleman did not disappointment.
As we turned a corner we saw a mural on the side of a building with brands.  This was a project of the Circle C Cowbells and is called the Brandin’ Wall.  The wall has the brands of Coleman County ranches and was the project was chaired by Ginger Sneed.

The Owl Drug Store has been in operation since 1923 and still has a Soda Fountain and Grill.  We stopped in to see what was offered and had a piece of Buttermilk Pie and Coffee.
The pie was outstanding although a little sweet for our taste.  The Owl is a piece of history that is still in operation and is a meeting place for locals and tourist.

Arriving back at Hord’s Creek Lake, the rain had stopped and it was still cool.  Not having been able to do anything outside in a week, we headed out for a walk.  The ground was so dry before the rain; there were still puddles of water.  Also there was water around the dam structure where yesterday there was none.  We realize it rained a lot yet we also realize Texas needs so much more rain.  This storm was truly a drop in the lake.
