Crescent City Farmers Market

The Saturday morning Crescent City Farmers Market in New Orleans was bursting with activity as well as color.  The flowers and vegetables would fill an artist palate with a rainbow of colors.  We always try to walk a market to see the offerings and then decide what to purchase.

Our best find was 10 count Shrimp for $5.00 per pound with a three pound purchase.  They were local shrimp from Lake Borgne and we already had dinner on our minds.  We added mushrooms, squash, cucumbers, peaches and plums to our produce.

The Creole Tomatoes were calling to us from many vendors.  Knowing we were going to the Creole Tomato Festival we decided to wait and purchase our tomatoes at the Fest.  There is just something about buying the Creoles from the Festival, they taste better.

The market has something for everyone.  While parents shop children were painting flower pots and planting pepper plants.  Nurturing their plant, they will supply the family with peppers in a few months.  This is a great way to get children involved in gardening and family cooking.

Many of the vendors sell prepared food and there are tables set up for people to sit, eat and visit.  The market becomes a social experience not just a place to purchase groceries.  We had tamales for breakfast: two bean and two vegetable and they were excellent.  Of course we had to have some French Market coffee to go along with our breakfast.

We decided to walk to the market for some exercise, about a 16 block walk.  The humidity was low and the temperature was not bad so it was a great walk.  Coming back we decided to ride the streetcar and enjoy the sights and sounds of the river front.

It was a great morning and a perfect way to get ready for Vieux To Do!
