Our Acadian roots drew us to the Canadian Maritimes where our ancestors were deported in 1755. Walking in the footsteps of our ancestors has been a dream of ours and after two previous attempts we finally made it to the Maritimes the summer of 2019.
Every five years since 1994 there is a gathering of Acadians, Congrès Mondial Acadien (Acadian World Congress), and 2019 marked the sixth Congrès. The location changes from Congrès to Congrès and in August 2019 the opening was held on Prince Edward Island. This gathering offers Acadians a chance to walk in the footsteps of their ancestors as well as attend various family reunions and meet long lost relatives.
The opening was emotional as was the meeting of so many of Acadian heritage. Although our ancestors did not live on Prince Edward Island, we wanted to see and experience everything the island had to offer.
Below are some of the sights we enjoyed on the island. From sunsets to lobsters to music to meeting locals we enjoyed everything and everyone we chanced to meet.
