Kicks on Route 66 – Oklahoma

Day One

One thing we have learned being full-time RVers is flexibility and this year we have stretched flexibility to the max. 2018 has been a year of change in many areas and for many reasons. Our planned trip to the Pacific Northwest did not happen and we found ourselves in Northeast Oklahoma and Route 66. Although we only traveled a very small segment of Route 66, we experienced some of the history of this famous Mother Road  in a small area and got our kicks on Route 66.Route 66 was not on our list this year, but when we found ourselves in Oklahoma and Route 66, as usual we decided to make the most of the area. Since wineries are high on our to do list, we were excited when we saw two wineries. Unfortunately both wineries are closed. One, Summerside Vineyards & Winery has moved to Tuttle, OK and the other, Oak Hills Winery and Vineyards was abandoned. Although the closed wineries were disappointing, a cafe on Route 66 was recommended.

We headed to Clantons Cafe in Vinita for lunch. We always want to experience the local flavor and were told to order “calf fries” and chicken fried steak. Clantons has been a tradition in Vinita since 1927 and has the distinction of being the oldest continually owned family cafe in Oklahoma on Route 66. The chicken fried steak was excellent yet the “calf fries” were what we really went to taste. They were excellent and you would never know you are eating beef testicles. Oh well, “When in Rome…”

Enough for one day, Saturday we planned to head to Chelsea and Foyil for more kicks on Route 66.
