Trails of Delphi Indiana – Part II

The swaying. The never ending swaying of a small suspension bridge designed to walk across is very exciting to traverse. The view of the river below, the nothingness between you and the river, and the swaying of the bridge stimulates the senses and awakens you. After a day in the countryside searching and finding covered bridges, we were still into bridges. On the way home we stopped at Trailhead Park to walk the suspension bridge. After crossing the bridge we decided to enjoy the trails. Since our bikes were not with us, we hiked the trails heading east.

The suspension bridge was built in 1994 across Deer Creek connecting Trailhead Park to Delphi Historic Trail system. After crossing the bridge we reached Robbins Trail, .5 mile and headed east since we had ridden the trails to the west. Landowners allowed this trail to skirt their land, hence the name Robbins Trail. The trail also generally follows Deer Creek and joins with Interurban Trail, .8 mile, and Happy Jack’s Loop, .5 mile. We chose Happy Jack’s Loop which passed areas rich in history. One area was the site of Daniel Baum’s cabin where the Carroll County Court was first held. The trail ends at the site of Smith Dairy Farm.

Interurban Trail, .8 mile, has an interesting history. It is a site where rail tracks ran carrying commuter electric trains. These were called Interurbans and ran on elevated rails. The commuter trains stopped operating in the 1930s. There is an overlook, Van Der Volgen Overlook and Rest Area, but was overgrown and we were not able to reach the overlook. We did walk the trail bed as far as possible.

We also passed Deer Creek Falls. The falls are not massive or high, yet they gracefully fall into Deer Creek.

It was a beautiful afternoon for a walk and we enjoyed everything the area offered.

Happy travels and many adventures along your journey.
