With an early morning marathon of four farmers markets, our new personal best, we turned to our immediate food need – breakfast. We were famished! After asking a few locals we decided on Dwyers’s Café in downtown Lafayette, LA.
Dwyer’s is one of those local restaurants which are generic in one sense but totally unique in another. This dichotomy is seen many times when we seek out the ‘local’ eateries instead of settling for the plastic food of chains. The scene is at once chaotic with rambunctious kids balanced with couples tying to wake up with their first cup of java.
Dwyer’s began its life as Stinson’s Café in the Garden Hotel in Lafayette, LA in 1927. Stanley Dwyer began working for the Dwyers in 1942 and became head cook. He held this position until 1965 when he purchased the café and renamed it Dwyer’s Café. Stanley’s family is continuing the tradition of bringing the best home cooking to Acadiana at an affordable price. The Dwyers say “We do what we do – because we love what we do…”
This is exactly what we found at Dwyer’s – good food at affordable prices. The coffee was the first surprise. The mugs were small and hot which kept the coffee hot as we sipped. We shared two sweet potato pancakes, grits, spinach mushroom and feta omelet and biscuit. The food was fresh, tasty and clean. By clean we mean not heavy in oil or loaded with cheese. We could taste each ingredient. The pancakes were not overly sweet.
As we were finishing breakfast, Dwyer’s was setting up their lunch buffet. We are not buffet fans yet this one looked fresh and inviting.
If we are in Lafayette on another Saturday morning, Dwyer’s it will be for breakfast after the four farmers markets.
