Sylvan Lake, SD

Trail BeginningSunday afternoon walk in the park – Custer State Park that is.  Sylvan Lake is called the “crown jewel” of Custer State Park.  The lake is at the base of Harney Peak and is surrounded by rock formations and ponderosa pine trees.

Theodore Reder built a dam across Sunday Gulch in 1881 creating Sylvan Lake.  Today the lake offers picnic areas, fishing, swimming, rock climbing and hiking.  We chose to hike the Sylvan Lake Shoreline Trail, the easiest trail around the lake.
