Popp Fountain New Orleans

FountainBlue sky, mild temperatures – what a dazzling day in the city!  Outside was beckoning and we could not resist.  Riding around NOLA was something we had not done in quite a while.  It was wonderful to be outside enjoying the day and the city.

Passing City Park we knew we had to stop and enjoy what the park offered.  Popp Fountain was our first stop since it is open on Sundays for exploring and appreciating along with the new Arbor Room.

In 1917 Mr. John F. Popp contributed money for a City Park Bandstand.  Shortly after the Popp Bandstand was dedicated, Mr. Popp died.  John F. Popp had a lumber dealership and manufacturers depot on the New Basin Canal. After Popp’s death, Rebecca Grant Popp wanted to memorialize her husband.  She donated $25,000 and the Olmsted Brothers designed what would be Popp Fountain in the late 1920’s.  The fountain along with an upper promenade bordered by 26 Corinthian columns reflecting the taste of early 1900’s was dedicated in 1934.  The WPA added tile walk ways, landscaping, and an art deco fountainhead.   The fountainhead of cast bronze leaping dolphins was designed by artist Enrique Alferez.  The fountain which was restored to its original splendor in 1999 emits water spray 30 feet into the air.

The lower promenade circling the fountain has cement benches for sitting and enjoying the peacefulness of the fountain and surroundings.  The area is landscaped with native flora and plantings and was in full color the day we visited.  The reds and pinks were exquisite against the blue sky.  Sitting on a bench enjoying the fountain spray and vibrant colors of the plants was a great way to appreciate the outdoors on a Sunday afternoon.
