Water in the morning, on the grill at night – can’t get much fresher.
Fishing on Grand Isle can be frustrating, exhilarating, boring and exciting all within an hours’ time.
Mardi Gras weekend was like that; fishing for four days and catching six flounder.
Catching a flounder was exciting, yet waiting for another bite became frustrating. There were five of us fishing, three males and two females, the females kicked butt. Laurie caught two flounders, Peggy caught three flounders, and Steve caught one flounder. John and Wayne were our support group. Ok enough of Laurie bragging.
The Grand Isle State Park has a long, high pier going out to the gulf for fishing and viewing the sights. Since the wind during our visit was vicious we decided to forgo the gulf pier and fish the lagoon. There is a new pier out to the lagoon with a long wide area for fishing. There our “fishing camp” was set up each day and we baited our hooks and waited and waited and waited…… Luckily we had chairs and liquid refreshment to make our wait pleasurable. The first day was a three flounder catch, the second day a two flounder catch, the third day a one flounder catch, and the fourth day a zero founder catch. Since our luck was on a declining scale, after the fourth day we decided enough torture.
On our first day of fishing, eight crab nets were put our and the result was one crab. We threw him back and decided enough of that. Laurie did catch a crab on her line, yet what do you do with one crab and six hungry Cajuns. That crab went back also.
Even though our founder catch was small for our effort, the taste was worth every second of waiting. Wayne and Steve were the official fish cleaners and the others of us were happy to give them the job and title. After cleaning the flounder, we cut them down the middle and opened them up for stuffing. The flounders were seasoned with salt and pepper, stuffed with stuffed crab and shrimp, rubbed with olive oil and grilled.
We did not weight the flounder although one flounder was enough for two hungry people. We added a green salad and had one of the freshest meals possible.
Would we fish Grand Isle again? You bet we would!
what a beautiful place
Thanks for the comment. It is very peaceful during the winter months.
