Turns Out Dorothy, We Were in Kansas Afterall

We found the Yellow Brick Road and it is in Liberal, Kansas.  Liberal is recognized as the official home of Dorothy Gale and the Land of Oz.  Dorothy’s house is a 1907 farmhouse donated to the Seward County Historical Society.  It was carefully restored and furnished to resemble the house in the movie “The Wizard of Oz”.

Next to the house is the Land of Oz with 5,000 sq. ft. of movie magic featuring good witches, bad witches, Munchkins, talking trees along with Dorothy, Toto, the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and the Lion.  The tour guide is “Dorothy” or  at least a young lady dressed as Dorothy, ruby slippers and all.

The final room of the tour is  filled with memorabilia including the original model of the house used in the filming of the tornado scene.  There are also many items donated by the Munchkins including dresses and shoes.  Over the years movie buffs have donated
various items relating to the “Wizard of Oz”.

“Dorothy” stated that L. Frank Baum, the author of the “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” was having trouble naming the wizard.  Leaning back in his chair, he looked at his filing cabinet and saw O-Z and Oz was born.

There is an annual celebration the second Saturday in October – Ozfest.  The fest includes a parade, look-a-like contest, entertainment, scarecrow building, and horse and buggy rides.  There are also vendors and food booths along with children’s activities.

Anyone who enjoys the “Wizard of Oz” will enjoy a visit to the Land of Oz.

We stay at St Vrain State Park. It is more than we like to spend on a spot considering the price and the sticker requirement but it is only a couple miles from our son’s place so paying for convenience. Other places are the Boulder county fairgrounds pricey too but not as bad as St Vrain, Boulder Elks, plus some places up near Loveland and Estes Park.
Sorry couldn’t be of that much help.

Thanks for the information. We are at the fairgrounds now. St. Vrain was booked and you are correct it is pricey. We were looking for something a little nicer. We are visiting my sister in Broomfield and from here heading to Custer, SD. Your blog has helped us with things to do and see. Maybe we will meet along the road one day. thanks again.
