Let It Grow

Outside OasisFarmers Market deprived, that is what we have been.  On the road for four weeks and no farmers markets available to us.  Anyone who knows us; knows we purchase most of our groceries from farmers markets on a weekly basis.  Withdrawal had begun to set in.

Arriving in Cortez, CO we headed to the Colorado Visitor Center for information on local attractions.  On the street corner we saw a sign for “Let It Grow” having fresh vegetables and coffee.  Now we were really in heaven – fresh vegetables and coffee, on our way.  Unfortunately they were closed for the next two days.  No worry we would still be in town; add Let It Grow to places to visit.

Let It Grow is dedicated to the culture of local agriculture.  Their mission is farm to table by being growers of healthy plants, roasters of coffee and cooks of local food.

Walking into Let It Grow, we entered an eclectic space with toys, books, gifts, seeds, plants, dried beans, fresh vegetables, eggs, coffee, garden tools, and prepared food.  There were probably many other items that we missed.  Fresh vegetables were in short supply and we were told it was just too early for most produce.  Eggs, cucumbers, heirloom tomatoes, and fresh roasted coffee were our purchases.  These were the very best vine ripe tomatoes we’ve had in many, many months; they were heaven in our mouths.

It was time for a good cup of coffee and a sweet.  Doug made us a special cup of dark, rich coffee that put a smile on our faces.  Paired with that was one of Melissa’s ginger snap cookies that melted in our mouths.  Yes, we were happy.

Outside was a cornucopia of flowers and vegetables for sale.  The colors were vibrant and many varietals offered.  Inside the variety was just as massive offering a wide range of home items.  What caught our eye were the heirloom dried beans with names we had never seen but wanted to try.  It was hard to decide what to buy but in the end Colorado River and Zuni Gold won out.  The beans were grown and packaged by the Dove Creek Bean Company.  We had driven through Dove Creek on the way to Cortez; too bad we did not know about the beans at that time.

We enjoyed our visit to Let It Grow and their dedication to the local economy.  Small business drives local economies and Cortez, CO is lucky to have Let it Grow.  If you are in the area, stop by for coffee and a sweet and visit with Doug and Melissa.
