National Eagle Center – Wabasha, MN

AngelThe room had a quiet hum and the anticipation was building. Although the walls were full of exhibits and posters no one was interested. There was even a video waiting to be turned on yet no one even thought to push the play button. We were sitting in the front row and along with everyone else we were patiently waiting – not sure what to expect yet knowing it would be awesome. We were about to be up close and personal with a full grown bald eagle.

The door opened and in came Buddy with Angel. What a magnificent sight – a full grown female eagle on the arm of her handler. We were speechless and awed. Buddy was talking giving us information about Angel yet we sat fixated, eyes on Angel. Slowly we tried to focus on what Buddy was saying so we could better understand the life and times of eagles.

Even though Angel can’t fly we had been warned that she might try. A full grown female has a wingspan of approximately 8 feet. At our closeness to Angle her wing would pass over our heads. Sure enough she spread her wings and tried to take off. Laurie about jumped out of her chair, even though we knew it was coming. The second time Angel tried to fly, we were ready and Laurie did not jump like a crazy woman.

It was an enjoyable time with Angel and we learned much about eagles and their lifestyle and habits. Yet mostly we just stared at Angel feeling honored we were able to be so close to our national bird. Our time was truly a gift and we treasured the opportunity.
