Shovel Point, Tettegouche State Park, MN

Palisade from the pointWe fell in love with Lake Superior, we know you’ve guessed that by now. The lake is breathtaking and it presents itself each time you round a bend in the road. Also, the North Shore of Lake Superior is full of outdoor adventures. Everywhere we turned or visited there were many options for enjoying the area. One such stop which was highly recommended was Shovel Point in Tettegouche State Park. When you think “point”, think climbing for a view.

The park has an interesting history beginning in 1910 when land was purchased from the Alger-Smith Lumber Company. The purchase was by a group of businessmen calling themselves the Tettegouche Club. They owned and protected the land until 1971 when the group sold to the deLaittres family. In 1979 the state of Minnesota purchased 3400 acres and named it the Tettegouche State Park.

Hiking to Shovel Point was relatively easy since the path was packed dirt, boardwalks, and steps (lots of steps). Along the way nature smiled with flowers, fall foliage, and vistas of Lake Superior. Once at the top, we could have sat for hours meditating and enjoying the views of Lake Superior and the Palisade Head.

But, back down we went (step by step) once again enjoying what nature was offering that day.
