Arkansas Post National Memorial – Gillett, AR

Picnic SettingIn the quietness of this wooded area we could envision early settlers who paddled their canoes on the river and landed in this serene spot. A fort would be established and fought for by many nationalities. But today it was the perfect setting for our picnic lunch.

What began as a French trading post in 1686 grew into a thriving town by 1863. The Civil War left Arkansas Post in shambles and it never recovered. In addition to the destruction of war, the river changed course in 1912 leaving the river town a mile away from the river. Today Arkansas Post is only a memory with the town cistern the only remaining trace of its life.

But it will not be forgotten, Arkansas Post is a National Memorial where the memories are housed and preserved. A film describes the town and area along with the historical importance of Arkansas Post.

Walking the grounds with the ruins, old canons, beautiful views and wildlife, one can only imagine what life was like in an earlier time. Besides this beauty there were also hardships. But today what remains is a great National Memorial for visitors to enjoy.
