Salt Air, Hot Coffee, Good Food

EntranceCrisp fall morning, sun shining, blue sky, and the smell of salt air. What better way to start the day?

We are not ones for eating out often, except when it comes to breakfast. For us, there is enjoyment going out early, having a cup of coffee and a good hot breakfast at a local establishment. As the Alabama Gulf Coast grows and prospers there are numerous restaurants available for breakfast – not all local.

This morning we were venturing down the Ft. Morgan Highway almost to the end in search of Sassy Bass Amazin’ Grill. It is not one of those fancy places with flashing signs and a big presence. No you could pass it if not paying attention. The restaurant is part of a complex including a market, liquor store, gift shop, pizza/deli, and grill.

When you enter, the explosion of color hits you, but in a fun way. There’s a relaxed welcoming sort of atmosphere which pulls you in. Coffee was hot and full of flavor, just what we needed. The breakfast menu offered the usual eggs, grits, biscuits, and meat options along with three Sassy Skillets. We decided to order one of the Sassy Skillets – Shrimp n’ Gouda Cheese Grits with a side order of biscuits. We also ordered a veggie omelet with grits and biscuits. Yes, we could have easily shared one entrée, but then we would not have been able to try two different items. Needless to say we left with a “go box”.

The shrimp and grits had an excellent flavor. The cheese grits added a depth to the dish. The shrimp were cooked with perfect seasoning and easy to pop the tails. The omelet was full of veggies and cooked just the way John likes it. The biscuits were a perfect match with hot coffee.

The restaurant looked like a rock’n place to be in the evening. There’s a small band area which promises a live performance at night. Their lunch and dinner meals have received great reviews. On our next trip we just might have to venture down for dinner. Hopefully they will have live music, good food, and maybe a little dancing.
