Where Trains Rolled – Day 2

Covington TrailheadSometimes you expect the same, only things are different. Our first experience with The Tammany Trace began from Fontainebleau State Park through wooded areas, quiet and relaxing. Today, beginning at the Covington trailhead was totally different. Hustle and bustle, traffic, workers, stores, and a mid-day market with people purchasing lunch. But with another perfect south Louisiana day and the trails calling, we began our second biking experience of the Trace by trucking our bikes to the Covington Trailhead and rode toward Abita Springs.

This was a shorter leg, 8 miles roundtrip, with many more streets to cross with four way stops. Again the trail was relatively flat but not as serene. The trail ran through more populated areas and didn’t have that peaceful feeling we’d had the day before.

We rode to the Abita Springs Trailhead and stopped for a short rest. The ride takes you over the Bogue Falaya River and into downtown Abita Springs. The trailhead is the Abita Tourism Plaza which houses the Abita Springs Trailhead Museum. Unfortunately the museum is only open Friday, Saturday and Sunday so we were unable to visit. That will be for another trip.

Upon our return to the Covington Trailhead we were excited to have lunch at the Wednesday Covington Farmers Market.  This is more of a lunch market with numerous prepared dishes to choose. The selection included muffuletta, egg rolls, spring rolls, tabbouleh (tabouli), various salads and more. We decided to share a half muffuletta and an order of egg rolls. Both were excellent and filling. While enjoying lunch we also appreciated listening to the Wednesday Acoustic Jam Session.

As we loaded the bikes on the truck we realized our day, ride, and lunch was another perfect day in south Louisiana.
