What’s Important When Camping?

Over the August 21st weekend Laurie and I went camping with two other couples.  First of all we have VERY SHORT memories because it was very HOT!  We went camping several weeks ago and decided that until it cooled off, we’d defer camping until it was more pleasant – lol.  It seems we’re typical Cajuns, give us a day off and we require retraining.  How soon we forget.  I’m able to poke fun at Cajuns in general because Laurie and I are both at least 50% Cajun.

So what’s important when a Cajun goes camping – Rving?  Well, first of all, especially in hot weather, there is a required never ending ice chest full of your favorite cold beverage.  When people in South Louisiana get together, more food that can be consumed by the gathered group is mandatory.   And, finally, a sense of humor because somewhere along the way you’ll be chided, ribbed, poked fun at, etc. and you need to be able to take it as well as dish it out.

With that setup, we began what was to be a long HOT Saturday in the park.  We had a few showers on the previous days so we also expected a little shower on Saturday as well.  We got a little more than expected with lots of lightning, gusty winds, and pouring rain – and it seemed to just sit on top of us for awhile.  During this downpour, we looked outside and saw a tree coming down toward my friend’s brand new Heartland 5th wheel and truck.  It turned out that they had just decided to bring in the canopy (a button inside of the dry RV does the trick) when the tree came down and missed the retreating canopy by inches, and the front of the 5th wheel.  Not so lucky with the truck however, with damage to the top and right topside of the bed of the truck.

OK, so when the rain stops and the damage is assessed, what is the first thing a South Louisiana RVer needs to do?  Well, the ice chest was outside of the path of the tree in good condition still filled with ice and beer.  Step one complete.  Then, OMG, the turkey fryer is in the middle of the tree debris and it’s time to put on the bird which has been brining for about 12 hours!  Scale the tree limbs, push the branches aside, dig down to the turkey fryer, and relief!  The fryer is ok.  Let’s hand it out, hook it up, get the bird on, and then we’ll worry about all this other crap…

So goes RVing with the No Club RV Club.  Steve and Laurie, we love you.  hehehehehe
